One of the most common questions I get from clients before the shoot is: "What should we wear?" And I can totally relate, as I have personally been there myself too! So, I have created this guide for you with the tips I always share with my clients.
I would like to start by telling you that the most important aspect is for your family to feel comfortable and for your clothing to represent who you are! So, if any of the following suggestions don't really apply to your family style, feel free to simply scrap this and go with what YOU want to wear in order to feel comfortable and be yourself.
Let's get started with planning the wardrobe for your family session:
Start by planning your outfit as the mum. Consider the type of outfit, colours, and style you prefer. This will serve as the basis for coordinating the rest of the family's outfits. Choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
Comfort is key during a family photo session. When you feel comfortable in your clothes, it will show in your photos. For the little ones, prioritise comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict their movement, they should be able to run, jump, and play freely during the photo session.
Coordinate Colours. Choose outfits with slight colour coordination or colours that complement each other. Neutral colours and earth tones are not only timeless but also complementary to different skin tones. They create a harmonious and cohesive look that keeps the attention on the subjects rather than one standout colour. Consider shades like beige, tan, cream, or soft browns for a warm and natural feel. A good way to start is by choosing 2-4 colours as a base and going from there.
Opt for soft fabrics and natural fibres that feel cosy against their skin. Natural fibres such as cotton, linen, or wool not only feel comfortable but also add texture and depth to your outfits.
Keep jewellery simple and minimalistic, and do your hair the way you’d normally do it while wearing these clothes.
For outdoor sessions, try to wear as casually as you would on a normal day at the park with your family.
When it comes to footwear, choose neutral-coloured shoes that complement the overall colour scheme of your family's outfits. Neutral tones like black, brown, grey, or cream work well to create a cohesive look.
Keep the Focus on Your Subjects: By opting for neutral colours, comfortable clothing, and avoiding excessive patterns or graphics, you ensure that the attention remains on your family. Avoid wearing clothing with writings/logos and too much texture – basically, anything that is too distracting.
The goal is to capture genuine moments and showcase the love and connections within your family. Enjoy the process and let's have fun creating lasting memories!
