First things first: the most important thing is that you feel comfortable, beautiful, and like yourself. These photos are all about celebrating you, your bump, and this incredibly special chapter—so if any of the suggestions don’t quite match your personal style, feel free to skip them and wear what feels right for you.
Let’s dive in and start planning your maternity session wardrobe!
Comfort is key during a maternity photo session. When you feel comfortable in your clothes, it will show in your photos. Prioritise comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement.
Start by planning your outfit as the mum. Consider the type of outfit, colours, and style you prefer. This will serve as the basis for coordinating the rest of the family's outfits. Choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
Coordinate Colours. Choose outfits with slight colour coordination or colours that complement each other. Neutral colours and earth tones are not only timeless but also complementary to different skin tones. They create a harmonious and cohesive look that keeps the attention on the subjects rather than one standout colour. Consider shades like beige, tan, cream, or soft browns for a warm and natural feel. If you have kids, a good way to start is by choosing 2-4 colours as a base and going from there.
Bring 2–3 Outfit Options if you want. Having a couple of options gives us flexibility depending on the location, lighting, and mood. I recommend bringing:
One flowy dress or gown (beautiful movement and soft shapes photograph really well).
One fitted outfit that hugs your bump—like a bodycon dress or a top with a snug skirt/pants.
One more casual or personal look, like jeans unbuttoned at the belly paired with a soft knit or crop top.
For a longer beach session, feel free to bring swimmers and an open button-down shirt for a relaxed, playful vibe.
Opt for soft fabrics and natural fibres that feel cosy against their skin. Natural fibres such as cotton, linen, or wool not only feel comfortable but also add texture and depth to your outfits.
Add Texture or Layers. Textures like lace, knits, or linen photograph beautifully. A kimono, cardigan, or sheer robe can add softness and variety without a full outfit change.
Consider Bare Belly Shots. If you're open to it, a simple bandeau or bralette with a flowing skirt or open button-down shirt can create timeless, intimate images.
Keep jewellery simple and minimalistic, and do your hair the way you’d normally do it while wearing these clothes.
For outdoor sessions, try to wear as casually as you would on a normal day at the park or beach.
Enjoy the process and let's have fun creating lasting memories!
