I recently had the honor of photographing a fundraising dinner for BorneHMRI – a research collaboration between Borne-UK and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). This incredible event was dedicated to a cause very close to my heart: finding answers to the causes of preterm birth. Held at the Ivy Ballroom, it was a night filled with compassion, hope, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference for families affected by premature birth.

Why This Cause Matters
Preterm birth is a global issue, affecting millions of babies each year. It’s not just a medical condition; it’s an emotional journey that impacts the lives of families and communities in profound ways. Babies born too soon often face long-term health challenges, and the emotional toll on families can be immense. The work that BorneHMRI is doing, in collaboration with experts at HMRI and Borne-UK, is not only critical to understanding the causes of preterm birth but also to developing strategies to prevent it.
As a mother and photographer, the importance of this cause resonates deeply with me. I have spent years capturing the essence of families, from newborns to generations of loved ones, and I understand the preciousness of life’s milestones. For families who experience premature birth, these moments are often filled with uncertainty and challenges. The research supported by BorneHMRI offers hope and the possibility of a future where more babies are born healthy and full-term.
The Ivy Ballroom: A Perfect Setting
The fundraising event for BorneHMRI was held at the Ivy Ballroom. The venue for the evening, the Ivy Ballroom, provided a stunning backdrop for the fundraiser. Its elegance and charm set the stage for an event that was both moving and inspiring. From the beautifully set tables to the twinkling lights and lively atmosphere, every detail contributed to the magic of the night.
As I moved around the room, capturing the joy, support, and generosity of the attendees, I couldn’t help but feel the warmth of the community coming together for such a vital cause. There was a palpable sense of solidarity, a shared understanding of the urgency to fund research that could change lives.

Honoring Dean and Sarah Mumm
A special highlight of The fundraising event for BorneHMRI at the Ivy Ballroom was the incredible work of Dean Mumm, retired Wallaby, and his wife, Sarah Mumm. Their tireless dedication to raising awareness and funds for BorneHMRI is nothing short of remarkable. They have become true champions of the cause, using their platform and voices to shine a light on the issue of preterm birth.
Dean and Sarah’s personal connection to the cause adds an extra layer of significance to their efforts. Their compassion, leadership, and unwavering determination were evident throughout the evening, as they graciously engaged with guests and shared their personal journey. As a photographer, I was able to capture intimate moments of their interaction with the crowd—moments that reflected the deep empathy and care they bring to this mission.

A Night of Generosity and Hope
One of the most touching aspects of the night was the generosity of the guests. The auction, led by Dean and other event organizers, brought in vital funds that will support ongoing research into the causes of preterm birth. Guests bid on a range of unique experiences and items, with all proceeds going directly to BorneHMRI’s research initiatives. The energy in the room was electric during the auction, and it was heartening to see so many people coming together to support this important work.
As a photographer, it’s always a privilege to capture moments of generosity and humanity. There’s something profoundly beautiful about witnessing people giving back, especially for a cause that has the potential to save lives. The smiles, the shared laughter, and even the quiet moments of reflection as people listened to stories of families affected by preterm birth—it was all part of the narrative that unfolded throughout the evening.
The Power of Community
Beyond the funds raised, the event was a powerful reminder of the strength of community. The support for BorneHMRI, from both individuals and organizations, showcased what can happen when people come together with a shared goal. Preterm birth is not just a medical issue; it’s a community issue, and the research being conducted by BorneHMRI will benefit families everywhere.
The stories shared during the evening—from parents of preterm babies to researchers and medical professionals—highlighted the importance of continued funding and awareness. It was a poignant reminder that while there is still much work to be done, events like this one are crucial in moving the needle forward. Every dollar raised, every hand shaken, and every story shared contributes to a future where fewer families have to experience the heartbreak of preterm birth.

My Role: Capturing the Moments
As the photographer for the Fundraising Event for BorneHMRI at the Ivy Ballroom, my role was to capture the essence of the event—the passion, the purpose, and the people who made it all possible. I moved around the Ivy Ballroom, documenting everything from the candid moments of guests enjoying themselves to the more formal parts of the evening, like speeches and the auction.
I always aim to capture not just the faces but the emotions that tell the story of the night. The laughter, the tears, the moments of deep connection—all of it came together to create a tapestry of memories that will live on long after the event itself. I’m honored to have played a small part in supporting such a meaningful cause through my lens.
Looking Forward
As the night came to a close, there was a sense of accomplishment in the air. The funds raised, the connections made, and the awareness spread were all steps toward a future where more babies are born full-term and healthy. But the work doesn’t stop here. The fight against preterm birth is ongoing, and BorneHMRI will continue its research and advocacy efforts until the mystery of preterm birth is solved.
For me, this evening was not just another event to photograph—it was a cause I deeply believe in. I left the Ivy Ballroom feeling inspired by the work of Dean, Sarah, and everyone involved with BorneHMRI, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to support their mission.
Together, we can create a future where all babies have the chance to thrive.
