What to Wear for a Winter Session: Tips from a Family Photographer

Preparing for a winter family photo session can be both exciting and challenging. As a family photographer, I understand that the most important aspect is for your family to feel comfortable and for your clothing to represent who you are!

In this blog post, I'll share some friendly tips and examples to help you dress your family for a winter photo session while staying true to yourselves - and being comfortable while shooting outdoors. Let's get started!

  1. Start by planning your outfit as the mum. Consider the type of outfit, colours, and style you prefer. This will serve as the basis for coordinating the rest of the family's outfits. Choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable.

  2. Comfort is key during a family photo session. When you feel comfortable in your clothes, it will show in your photos. For the little ones, prioritise comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict their movement. They should be able to run, jump, and play freely during the photo session.

  3. Coordinate Colours. Choose outfits with slight colour coordination or colours that complement each other. Neutral colours and earth tones are not only timeless but also complementary to different skin tones. They create a harmonious and cohesive look that keeps the attention on the subjects rather than one standout colour. Consider shades like beige, tan, cream, or soft browns for a warm and natural feel - check the examples below.

  4. Dress in layers to stay warm and comfortable. Adding thermals underneath the clothing will add extra comfort to the kids. You can also incorporate cute hats and scarves into your family's outfits for added warmth and style.

  5. Opt for soft fabrics and natural fibres that feel cosy against their skin. Natural fibres such as cotton, linen, or wool not only feel comfortable but also add texture and depth to your outfits. Choose clothing made from these materials to enhance the visual appeal of your family's attire. Soft fabrics contribute to a cosy and inviting atmosphere during your winter photo session.

  6. When it comes to footwear, choose neutral-coloured shoes that complement the overall colour scheme of your family's outfits. Neutral tones like black, brown, grey, or cream work well to create a cohesive look. Here's an example of kids' winter shoes.

  7. Keep the Focus on Your Subjects: By opting for neutral colours, comfortable clothing, and avoiding excessive patterns or graphics, you ensure that the attention remains on your family. The goal is to capture genuine moments and showcase the love and connections within your family.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to capture genuine moments and unique connections within your family. Enjoy the process, and have fun creating lasting memories!
